THAME Cattle Market’s hopes of moving to a new location were handed a boost this week.
The planning application for the proposed new site at the Showground was last week granted by South Oxfordshire District Council.
The move depends on a controversial Sainsbury’s application to develop the current cattle market site into a new superstore being approved.
If permission is granted, Sainsbury’s is in line to fund the relocation of the cattle market to the Showground.
Brian Lloyd, chairman of Thame Cattle Market, said: “We are delighted that the detailed planning permission has been granted.
“Combined with the agreement with Sainsbury’s this decision brings the cattle market a step closer to relocating to the Showground and thus securing our future in Thame.
“The future of the cattle market is important to the local agricultural industry and helps keep Thame a unique market town.”
The move is not altogether a popular one with many people questioning the need for a Sainsbury’s and its subsequent impact on the town centre.
