‘We need rules on fracking’, says Labour leader

The use of a controversial gas extraction process blamed for causing small earthquakes should be decided on by district councillors, a party leader has said.

Councillor Robin Stuchbury, Labour, has tabled a motion that, if passed, would see Aylesbury Vale District Council push to be fully represented in the fracking licence-granting process.

Land between Aylesbury and Winslow has been earmarked as a potential shale gas reserve and the Vale is currently under consultation as a potential ‘onshore’ gas site to be licenced.

At present, the district council only gets to offer an opinion on possible fracking sites. Mr Stuchbury wants it to be more involved in the decision making.

He said: “Even if we believe it to be not in the public interest we are going to be unable to stop it.”

Mr Stuchbury’s motion is due to go before full council on February 27.
