WADDESDON Manor is set to create a new 60-acre woodland with 37,000 trees to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

The plans also include a new wetlands area, disabled access and flower meadow.

Although the new woods will be on Waddesdon Manor’s estate, there will be no charge to enter it.

Planting will start in the next few weeks and the new attraction is expected to open in two years’ time.

Head gardener Paul Farnell, 58, has worked at Waddesdon for 15 years and leads a team of 12 full-time gardeners.

He said: “We will start the first batch of planting this winter, with somewhere in the region of 22,00 British tree varieties going in – such as oak, ash, beech and wild cherry.”

“The rest will be planted next year.

“We are having a community fun day on Saturday February 11 where people can come and plant a tree.

“We are encouraging families and young people to come along.

“They will need to bring a spade and appropriate clothing.

“It is from 11am-2pm.”

Unlike most people in the Vale, he is hoping for rain over the summer to help create a wetlands area with ponds and habitats for newts and dragonflies.

Before the new wood opens, boards will be laid to allow easier access for the disabled and parents pushing children in buggies.

He said: “It will be located just beyond the plant centre, outside the pay barrier so it will be free to access for all local people.

It is part of the Woodland trust’s plans to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee

“It will take two years before it is really ready for opening.
