THAME Mayor Adam Buckland has stated his surprise at the low number of candidates standing for the upcoming town elections.

All eight seats in Thame North will be uncontested and there is only nine candidates going up for election in the South section of the town.

He said: “It is a bit strange that there isn’t an election on the north side.

“I thought there would be more people standing because of the housing issue in the town, which a lot of people seem to be concerned with.

“I am always amazed how people are quick to express their opinions but don’t want to put their names forward to get involved in the decision making.

“I guess it is due to a lack of time but it is a shame because we need a good cross section of views on the council.”

Despite the low number of candidates up for election, the mayor is still encouraging people to register their vote.

He said: “The most important thing is for people to come out and vote, especially young people so that they can have their say.

“I find a lot of people will moan about the issues but won’t vote.

“Whatever party they decide to choose for they need to register their vote.”

Candidates will now spend the next four weeks leafleting houses in the town, to get their points across before election day on May 5.
