Snow and icy chills may have wreaked havoc at the weekend but it did not stop people in Thame sweeping through the streets to tidy up.
The third annual Tidy Thame Day defied the bitter chill as numbers turned out in force.
Former Thame mayor Adam Buckland, who started the scheme in 2011 and is still heavily involved, said: “There wasn’t as many people as the last couple years but the scouts were out at about 9am and there were lots of volunteers going down the Phoenix Trail.
“There’s a real lot of support for it here and even those who can’t help on the day say they try to help through the rest of the year.
“It’s that one day of the year people give their services back to the town.”
Mr Buckland, who runs Brothers Hair Salon in the town, said he was seeking to get more businesses involved next year to help with sponsoring the day.
“Most of the bags of rubbish were tin cans, bottles and sweet wrappers. Lots of it comes from supermarkets, not that it’s their fault,” said Mr Buckland.
“But even if they give £100 for the day it would be good.”
The groups and residents spruced up areas such as Lea Park, the Phoenix Trail, the Cricket Ground, Cuttlebrook Nature Reserve and the village of Moreton by clearing up litter and cutting back brambles.
The day was supported by BIFFA, ASM, the Fire Service, the Police, SOHA, Town Council staff.
