A senior police officer has called for the community to work together to prevent opportunist burglars over the summer.

Thames Valley Police has launched its summer burglary prevention campaign and has given out a number of tips on how to keep homes secure.

Neighbourhood inspector Kelly Glister said: “Sometimes this is a really vulnerable time of year.

“You come into this lovely weather we have been having and people will be out gardening, they’ll leave windows open and doors unlocked.

“It’s a prime time for opportunity. No one would probably even notice something missing. It’s a prime time for opportunists.”

Tips include ensuring your home looks occupied when away, not leaving valuables on display and not advertising online that you’re going away.

Insp Glister said neighbours could help by keeping an eye on each other’s properties if away on holiday or at an event.

She added that PCSOs would knock on people’s homes if they believed they look vulnerable.

“It’s all about crime prevention and reduction across the Vale,” she added.

“The police are not the be all and end all. It would be helpful if there’s that community spirit.”
